New Releases: Angelo Madsen Minax

VDB is pleased to welcome Angelo Madsen Minax to the collection! We are so excited to be taking on twenty works, including Madsen's earliest video explorations compiled as the release Chicago Sex Change: 2002-2008, Early Videoworks by Angelo Madsen Minax. The compilation brings together nine short videos originally unintended for release and featuring collaborations with Madsen’s friends, partners, and lovers to form a punk-documentary tapestry of 2000s queer life in Chicago.

Madsen is a multi-disciplinary artist, filmmaker, and educator. His projects consider how human relationships are woven through personal and collective histories, cultures, and kinships, with specific attention to subcultural experience, phenomenology, and the politics of desire. Madsen's works have shown at Berlinale, Sundance Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, New York

Film Festival, Tribeca Film Festival, BAM CinemaFest, Art of the Real at Lincoln Center, Anthology Film Archives, British Film Institute, and dozens of LGBT and experimental film festivals around the world. His film North By Current (2021) aired on season 34 of POV (PBS) and received the Cinema Eye Honors Spotlight award, the IDA's Best Writing award, an Independent Spirit award nomination, and numerous festival jury prizes. Madsen is currently an Associate Professor of Time-Based Media at the University of Vermont, and has recently been a USA Artists Fellow and Guggenheim Fellow.

e-Flux Screening Room will spotlight Madsen's works on February 29, 2024 at 7PM EST. The screening will include selections from Madsen's compilation of newly restored early works, as well as the recent work Bigger on the Inside (2022), and a clip from A BODY TO LIVE IN, a feature film in production. Madsen will be in attendance for discussion.
