This video collects public service announcements created by a number of independent producers, including Jem Cohen and Michael Stipe of R.E.M.  Powerful and provocative, these PSAs address issues such as organic farming, abortion rights, street harassment, and the environment. Included are:

They Have Dreams by Natalie Merchant and Abigail Simon which focuses on the plight of homeless children.

Monuments by Adam Cohen counsels consideration of what monuments we leave for the future in the wake of military build-ups and ever-expanding landfills.

Family by Yalonda Busbee and Dorothy Owusu frankly confronts the negative assumptions about single black mothers with the positive, life-affirming truths.

Right to Know by Jason Kliot announces the federal ruling granting all citizens access to information on toxic waste locations.

Sexual Harassment by Jane Pratt and Patti Hunter reframes the issue of sexual harassment as a matter of respect for a woman’s privacy on the street and elsewhere.

Step out of the Shadows by Joana Vincente emphasizes that the right to vote is a responsibility and a privilege that leads to empowerment.

This Is a Condom by Jim McKay provides basic information about condoms, providing slang terms, in the service of safe sex education.

The C-Hundred Film Corp was founded in 1987 by Jim McKay and Michael J. Stipe. In the early 1990s the organization produced an award-winning series of 21 public service announcements, collectively titled Direct Effect. Since then the company has developed numerous independent features, including Girls Town (Jim McKay, 1996), Benjamin Smoke (Jem Cohen and Peter Sillen, 2000), Our Song (Jim McKay, 2000), The Sleepy Time Gal (Christopher Munch, 2001), and Stranger Inside (Cheryl Dunye, 2001).
